FPLXI vs ChatGPT for FPL
Asking ChatGPT for FPL advice is free, instant, and often reads beautifully. The trouble is that it does not know this week's prices, cannot reliably do the arithmetic, and will never tell you when it was wrong.
No card required · Free team rating from your FPL ID · Prices and features checked August 2026
ChatGPT is a very good general assistant and it will happily talk about your squad: fixture difficulty, chip strategy, the case for a captain. With browsing on it can look things up. For understanding a concept, or writing your mini-league trash talk, it is genuinely useful and it costs nothing.
What it cannot be is a model. It has no live feed of prices, injuries or ownership unless it goes looking, it cannot evaluate every legal transfer against a points projection, and it will state invented numbers with total confidence. There is no scoreboard either. Ask the same question twice and you may get two answers, and nobody records which one was right.
FPLXI is the boring alternative. Our own model, trained on hundreds of thousands of real player-gameweek records, predicts every player's points five gameweeks out and reruns daily against live data. A deterministic optimiser then finds the best legal XI, captain, vice, bench order and transfers by calculation. AI gets one job, which is explaining the decision after the numbers have made it. And every prediction is locked at the deadline and scored in public.
FPLXI and ChatGPT, side by side
| Feature | FPLXI Predictions, optimiser and a published accuracy record | ChatGPT A general-purpose chat assistant, not a football model |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Yes. A full team rating plus one recommendation refresh every gameweek, from your FPL ID or a screenshot of your squad. | Yes. A capable free tier, with paid plans for higher limits and better models. |
| Cost for a full season | £19.99 once for the 2026/27 season. That was the early bird price when we checked, and it goes up after the GW3 deadline. | Free, or roughly £16 to £20 a month for a paid plan. |
| Purpose-built FPL points model | Yes. Our own machine-learning model gives every player a points prediction per gameweek, five gameweeks ahead, rebuilt daily. | No. A general language model. It reasons about football from text, it does not project points from data. |
| Knows today's prices, injuries and ownership | Prices and injury news every half hour, fixtures hourly, predictions rebuilt daily. | Partly. Only if it browses, and then only what it happens to find. Its own training data is months old. |
| Arithmetic you can rely on | Yes. Budget, formation and club limits are enforced by the optimiser, so every suggestion is legal and priced correctly. | No. Confident arithmetic errors and invented figures are a known failure mode, illegal squads included. |
| Transfers ranked by points gained | Yes. Ranked by the predicted points they gain, with alternatives and the reasoning written out in plain English. | No. It will suggest moves, but nothing is evaluated exhaustively or ranked. |
| Captain, vice and bench solved for you | Yes. Best legal XI, captain, vice and the full bench order, solved by a deterministic optimiser. | Partly. It will pick one and justify it fluently, with no model behind the choice. |
| Prediction accuracy published every gameweek | Yes. Every prediction is locked at the deadline and scored against real results on a public page, whether you have paid or not. | No. Nothing is recorded, so nothing can be scored. |
| Same question, same answer | Yes. The optimiser is deterministic. Identical inputs give identical output. | No. Answers vary between runs, sometimes materially. |
| Explains the reasoning | Yes. AI writes the explanation, after the model and optimiser have decided. | Yes. Explanation is the thing it does best, whether or not it is correct. |
| General football and life advice | No. FPL squads only. It will not help with your CV. | Yes. Anything you like. |
| Time to a decision | Minutes. Import your squad, read the rating, take the top-ranked move. | Seconds, and then the doubt. |

Stay with ChatGPT if
- You want to understand a concept rather than action a decision.
- You enjoy talking your squad through with something conversational.
- You are not spending money on FPL tools this season, on principle.
- You need one tool for everything, and FPL is a small part of it.
Pick FPLXI if
- You want numbers that come from a football model, not from prose.
- You want every suggestion to be legal, priced and ranked by points gained.
- You want the same answer twice, and a public record of how often it was right.
- You want AI to explain a decision, not make it.
Moving across
Keep using ChatGPT. It is a good assistant and we would never say otherwise. Just stop asking it for numbers. Put your FPL ID into FPLXI, take the rating and the ranked move, and use the chat assistant for what it is genuinely good at: explaining rules, summarising news, arguing about your captain. FPLXI will not hold a conversation. There is no chat interface and we are not adding one.
Questions people actually ask
Can ChatGPT pick my FPL team?
It can produce something that looks like a team. Whether it is legal, correctly priced and based on this week's data is another matter, and invented numbers are common. FPLXI enforces budget, formation and club limits by construction.
So FPLXI is just an AI wrapper?
No. The predictions come from our own machine-learning model, trained on real player-gameweek data and rerun daily. The transfers, XI, captain and bench come from a deterministic optimiser. AI writes the explanation afterwards, and nothing else.
Why does a published accuracy record matter?
Because it is the only way to tell a model from a confident voice. Every FPLXI prediction is locked before the deadline and scored against real results on a public page, free to read whether you have paid or not.
Is FPLXI worth paying for when ChatGPT is free?
Try it free and decide. The free tier rates your squad and gives you a full recommendation refresh every gameweek. The Season Pass is £19.99 once for the whole 2026/27 season, with nothing to renew.
